How Do I Do Pilates?

Pilates has drastically grown in popularity due to

the fact that you can easily perform these exercises at home or at the gym. Additionally, you don’t have to spend a lot of money in order to get started.

In order to get comfortable with the basics, consider taking one or two Pilates classes. Once you have learned how do perform the techniques properly so you do not put undo stress on your body, you can continue to perform these exercises at home. There are some basic equipment items that you should purchase so you can use them at home. These items include a mat, comfortable clothing, instructional DVDs, and an exercise ball.

As you become more involved in Pilates, there is more advanced equipment that you can also purchase, although these are more expensive. These advanced machines will help you to tone all of the muscles in your body, although you have plenty of time to buy this later if finances are an issue. Try to find a quiet area to work out in. The most important thing is to consistently work out. You will not be satisfied with the results unless you make the time to work out several times a week.

What are the Pilates Principles?

Answer:
The Pilates Principles consist of five to nine

principles that are the foundation of Pilates exercise.  The founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates , did not directly put forth these principles.

Rather, the principles were set in place by Pilates instructors.  Because of this, there is no universal agreement on the number of principles, or the wording, among the Pilates community.

Here is a basic rundown of some of the principles:

    Concentration - The conscious control, and total commitment to each movement enhances body awareness.

    Control - Proper form performed safely is more important than intensity and reps.

    Centering - Mental focus calms the spirit. Focusing on the center of the body, or core, allows the rest of the body to function in a more efficient way.

    Stabilizing - Stillness must be achieved before you can move.

    Breathing - Conscious patterns of diaphrambic breathing, while thinking of the lungs as a bellows, are used to initiate movement.

    Alignment - Proper alignment from your head to your toes is the key to good posture.

     Fluidity - Pilates emphasises smooth, graceful, continuous motions rather than jerky repetitions.

     Integration - By engaging several muscle groups at once, one achieves a greater control and support over their movement.
