How Do I Clean Marble?

Marble is a beautiful stone, but it must be properly

cared for or it will quickly lose its luster. Marble will stain easily, it is porous, and it is etched by acids.

If anything is spilled on the marble, be sure to wipe it off immediately. Beverage glasses will leave rings on marble, so do not set glasses directly on the marble. For regular cleaning, wipe surfaces with lukewarm water and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. A damp chamois will not leave streaks. You can also clean the surface with a mild dish soap, and then rinse with warm water and wipe dry. A light coating of wax will help to protect the marble, but it is not necessary.

You can also buy commercial marble cleaners to help liven up dull floors, and then polish to a shine. Tin oxide can be used to polish dull or etched surfaces. Rub this on with a damp cloth, using an electric polisher to dress it up again.

For organic stains, such as tea and coffee, make a poultice soaked with twenty percent hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia. This should get rid of the stain. For oily stains, sprinkle on an absorbent powder, wait a few minutes, and then brush away. Repeat if the stain is not gone.
