What is a Side Entry Garage?

Answer:
A side entry garage is merely a garage structure

(usually part of a house or other building) with its vehicle entry doors located so they face toward the side of the property.  Many houses today are designed with side entry garages.

A side entry garage really is nothing more than a garage which has its vehicle entry doors located so they face the side of the property, rather than the front (or, I suppose, the back).

It is very difficult to tell just when and where the concept of side entry garages first emerged.  There is not very much data available which would offer even a hint.

One could speculate that such a concept might even have connections to quite ancient ideas of keeping their modes of transport around the side or back of their property; i.e., in the stables or barns or carriage houses.  I don't think too many property owners parked their horses and buggies out in front of their homes, though I am not sure.

In any event, it seems the logical thing would be to keep animals protected by keeping them out of plain sight and safe from predatory night prowlers.  In some sense, perhaps that same philosophy applies to today's side entry garages as well.  Maybe side entry garages are partly to protect our transport devices from predators.

It becomes clear how many of today's home designs promote side entry garages, especially when considering many of today's young, ur...

What is a Tandem Garage?

Answer:
One way to create an oversized garage space

in a narrow property lot is to use an attached tandem garage design. A tandem garage allows two vehicles to be parked end-to-end instead of side-by-side in a traditional two-car garage arrangement.

A tandem garage does not require as much width as a standard garage, but it still provides the additional storage or workshop space many homeowners desire.  The main drawback of a tandem garage design, however, is that drivers must park their cars end-to-end , which may create a logistical problem without two separate means of exiting.  Some tandem garage designs do allow for a separate rear garage door which opens into the backyard.  A second driver may be able to access an alley to exit the property or a separate driveway may lead around the tandem garage to the main road.  The ideal arrangement for a tandem garage is to have a primary car for regular commutes in the front and a second car for occasional use parked in the rear.

A modified tandem garage may have room for a third car or extra storage space .  In this configuration, the garage would have two doors in the front, with room for one car on the left and two cars parked in tandem on the right.  The third vehicle could be a recreational vehicle or a family car shared by parents and children.  The space for a third car can also be converted into a workshop or even finished off as a spare room for other uses.  A t...
