What is eczema?

Answer:
Eczema is an itchy rash on the ski n

(technically called atopic dermatitis) which is usually accompanied by hay fever or asthma and typically strikes children.  However, it can continue into adulthood, and some cases are first seen as adults.

Eczema is usually found behind the knees or on the arms (though it can be in other places), and it’s extremely itchy.  It tends to flare up and then disappear for long periods of time, even up to years.  Although it usually is first seen between the ages of 5 and 7, it can appear at any age .  Stress, long showers or baths, low humidity, cigarette smoke, and dry skin are among the triggers.

Eczema appears as reddish or brownish-gray patches on the skin; scratching makes the itching worse, and it will break the skin and cause it to scale over.  If you are so uncomfortable you can’t sleep or if you think your skin might be infected from the scratching, see your doctor.  Over the counter creams can relieve the itching for milder cases.  Doctors will prescribe corticosteroid creams for serious itching problems – though you can also get corticosteroid creams over the counter.  Oral antihistamines can also help with the itching, especially those which make you drowsy (which can cause better sleep at night).

Some doctors will also suggest phototherapy , which seems to help in some cases.  There are a variety of prescription oral cortisone drug...
