What is Cancer?

Answer:
Cancer refers to the common disease that affects various tissues and organs of the body wherein malignant, or harmful, tumors spread and

take over the body.  These tumors are caused by cells that have lost the ability to cease dividing. These cells also often live beyond their usual duration , causing not only an overabundance of new cells but also a lingering of old cells.  Finally, cancer cells also have the ability to invade and, in a sense, infest other tissues. 

None of these actions are what normal, healthy cells do and these actions are the result of the disruption of the normal activities and functions of cells.  In other words cancer cells have faulty programming (DNA) .  The way cancer often spreads in the body is via a process called metastasis , which means that cancer cells have broken away from the main mass and are carried to other parts of the body via the bloodstream or through the lymphatic system. 

Different cancers behave quite differently , have different growth rates and have different treatment options and cure rates.  There are some cancers that have some genetic causation while others appear to occur randomly.  Common treatments involve chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
