How Do I Treat Bronchitis?

Answer:
Bronchitis is an inflammation of your bronchi.

The bronchi are the tubes which connect your trachea to your lungs. This is typically caused by an infection, either bacterial or viral. Chronic bronchitis is caused by a continuous irritation to the lungs, such as smoking or exposure to chemicals.

You should reduce exposure to toxins. Avoid being around chemicals or smoking, and stay indoors during times of high pollution. If you work with irritations or must be outside, wearing a mask can help to lessen your symptoms.

Use a humidifier or vaporizer to add moisture to the air. This helps to loosen secretions and makes it easier for you to breathe. Placing a hot water bottle or warm moist cloth on your chest and back can reduce inflammation and make it easier to sleep comfortably. If you have to go out into cold air, cover your nose and mouth with a scarf. Try not to use cough suppressants. You need to cough in order to bring up the secretions.

You should also work on improving your diet. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, herbal teas, and soups. Also avoid mucus forming foods such as dairy products, white flour, sweet fruits, sugar, and some processed foods. Also avoid things that cause allergic reactions.
