What Is Black Lung Disease?

Answer:
Black Lung Disease , also known as Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) ,

is defined as the medical disorder which is characterized by the presence of black colored lungs instead of normal pink color.

Black lung disease is a form of pneumoconiosis that is mainly caused by the prolonged inhalation of coal mine dust by coal miners and others who tends to work with coal. This inhaled coal dust is mainly composed of silica and carbon , progressively build up in the lungs of such workers and leads to the inflammation, fibrosis and in the worst case, necrosis. Some of the symptoms of black lung disease include shortness of breath, chronic cough, labored breathing, weight loss, pulmonary hypertension, and stiffness in lungs.

Black lung disease can be diagnosed through examination of exposure history, chest x-rays, chest CT scan, chest radiography, and exclusion of alternate diagnoses . There is no cure for black lung disease. However, symptomatic treatment can be provided to the affected person in order to improve his/her quality of life.
