What is Bariatric Surgery?

Answer:
Bariatric surgery refers to medical procedures done

to aid patients in losing weight. This includes Roux-en-Y surgery (frequently called gastric bypass) and gastric banding (often referred to by the trademarked brand name of one device, Lap-Band.)

Due to the lower mortality and complication rates associated with laproscopic surgery, most bariatric surgeries are done this way now. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery creates a small pouch from the upper portion of the stomach and attaches that to the lower intestine, “bypassing” the majority of the digestive system. The smaller pouch results in the patient feeling full much more quickly , therefore reducing the amount of food they eat.

Gastric banding accomplishes a similar effect by placing an inflatable tube or band around the upper portion of the stomach . Over a period of weeks, the band is filled with a solution and begins to tighten around the stomach. This creates a bottleneck in the digestion and keeps more food at the top of the stomach, where it sends signals of fullness to the brain. Though often not as effective as the Roux-en-Y surgery, the lower rate of complication and potential reversibility of it makes it a popular choice.
