What Is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga yoga is one of the many disciplines

of yoga that is practiced throughout the world. Ashtanga means “eight limbs” in Sanscrit, which references the eight limbs of yoga which were laid out in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali . The ashtanga method of yoga was i nterpreted by Krishnamacharya and Sri K. Pattabhi Jois from an ancient text that described a unique system of hatha yoga called the Yoga Korunta , which was developed by Vamana Rishi .

Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) first began his studies with Krishnamacharaya at the age of 12 in Mysore, India . He went on to become the leading practitioner and teacher of Ashtanga yoga . This type of yoga is a set series of poses which are done in a flowing Vinyasa style .

In 1958, Pattabhi Jois published Yogo Mala , his book on Ashtanga yoga . A student will progress at their own pace through each of the six different Ashtanga series .

The Ashtanga method of yoga stresses daily Vinyasa flow practice using ujjayi breathing, mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and drishti.

The first series, Yoga Chikitsa , is described in Yoga Mala. The purpose of Yoga Chikitsa, which translates to yoga therapy , is as follows: realign the spine, detoxify the body, and build strength, stamina, and flexibility. It consists of a series of about 75 poses, which takes between and hour and a half and two hours to complete. The series begins with sun salutations (surya namaskara A and surya namaskara B), and moves on the standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and backbends before the relaxation phase.

Nadi Shodana, which translates to nervous system purification , is the intermediate or second series of poses. The poses are designed to cleanse and strengthen the nervous system and the subtle energy channels throughout the body. This series is not implemented until the primary series is strong. During this series, the same progression is followed (sun salutations, standing, sitting, etc.) as the primary series, but new poses and variations are introduced.

The four advanced series are named the Sthira Bhaga, which translates to divine stability . Pattabhi Jois had originally laid out two intensive advanced series, but later he divided them into four series in order to make them attainable for more people. These later series concentrate on difficult advanced arm balances and should only be attempted by extremely advanced students.
