What Is Appendectomy?

Appendectomy is defined as the surgical procedure that is performed in order to remove vermiform appendix.


Vermiform appendix is a blind-ended tube that projects from caecum with unknown function. It is surgically removed when it becomes infected or inflamed. Such infected appendix has the possibility to leak and infect other abdominal areas resulting in serious complications. This can be prevented by performing appendectomy under general anesthesia so that patient falls asleep and no pain is felt during surgical procedure.

Appendix can be removed either by making a small cut in the lower right hand side of the belly area or by using minimal invasive techniques and a camera known as laparoscopic appendectomy. Sometimes, a small tube may be left in the belly area for draining out the fluid or pus formed as a result of thorough washing of abdomen during surgery following appendix rupture or abscess formation.
