What is Anaerobic exercise?

Anaerobic exercise is used most often by athletes

participating in non-endurance sports to build power and strength. Body builders train anaerobically in order to develop more muscle mass.

When muscles are trained under anaerobic conditions they respond in a different biological manner.  This allows for better performance in short duration, high-intensity physical activities.

An anaerobic activity is one that is carried out without oxygen . This terminology refers to the use of oxygen on a molecular, it does not mean that the participant is holding their breath until they are purple in the face.

Using a relatively heavy barbell curl as an example, a person should only be able to do eight to ten repetitions.  The muscle doesn't have enough stored oxygen to carry out any more volume and the breathing can not keep up with the need. Where as jumping rope is much different.  A person can complete hundreds, if not thousands, of jumps without stopping.  In fact, it is usually the cardio-respiratory system that gives out in this case.
