What Is Acute Myeloid Leukemia?

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is defined as the

rapidly progressing form of cancer of blood and bone marrow that affects a group of myeloid cells (immature cells of bone marrow).

The myeloid cells can develop into various types of blood cells like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The mostly affected myeloid cells of blood are usually of white blood cells . Acute myeloid leukemia is commonly found in adolescents and young adults . Acute myeloid leukemia is also known as acute myelogenous leukemia or acute myeloblastic leukemia or acute granulocytic leukemia and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. Acute myeloid leukemia can be a result of hereditary factors, exposure to carcinogenic agents like benzene, tobacco smoke, ionizing radiations and chemotherapy.

Some of the symptoms of acute myeloid leukemia include fatigue, easy bruising, shortness of breath, bleeding, slow healing of wounds, and increased risk of infection. Acute myeloid leukemia can be diagnosed through blood and bone marrow tests . Acute myeloid leukemia can be treated through chemotherapy, radiation therapy, induction therapy, and consolidation therapy .
