What is AIDS?

Answer:
AIDS, which stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome,

is a disease that affects the body’s immune system. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) , which is spread through the share of bodily fluids such as blood, breast milk, semen, or vaginal fluid. AIDS has spread widely enough to now be considered a pandemic, affecting more than 33 million people worldwide and with an estimated death toll of more than 2 million.

While AIDS itself has no symptoms, it weakens the body’s immune system and allows other diseases to attack the body . Thus, opportunistic infections which normally don’t occur in people with properly functioning immune systems serve as a sign that an individual has contracted AIDS. Meningitis, pneumocystis pneumonia, tuberculosis, and chronic diarrhea are among the most common forms of opportunistic diseases in individuals with AIDS.

Sadly, neither a cure nor a vaccine for AIDS exists yet. Treatments may slow the course of disease or treat the symptoms and opportunistic diseases, and patients usually are given a combination of antiretroviral drugs to reduce the effect of the disease on the patient’s life. However, these drugs often have serious side effects and do not entirely stop the disease.
